I totally agree. My husband and I have been living minimally for a decade now and we watch in amazement at all the garbage our friends and family have to deal with mentally and spatially. We live in a 750 square foot home and people always look at us and the house in wonder...how can you live in something this small? We're only 2 people, how many rooms can be be in at once? It's easy for us, but for most people I think it's about image. What will people think of me if I drive X, or live in a house X size, or I don't own X size TV? If you can free yourself from the cage of what others think of you and realize what you need and want in life for real, you can live in a minimal way easy. EASY PEASY.

@Suzie

Exactly! Deciding to dial back our consumer behavior (or not) is completely up to us as individuals.

@Dan

I agree - I think the reason for a lot of clutter is that people don't want to "waste" perfectly good stuff. But stuff that is idle with no real plan to put it into use is just another more subtle, kind of waste.

@Patty

Thanks!

I remember hearing your story about moving to a boat and heading to Mexico! It's amazing how serious travel can help realign your priorities - I felt very much the same way after an Outward Bound canoe trip (a month with no showers and a tent for a roof). Maybe it's time for me to do more camping! ;)
